Places
- Heimaeyjar is the largest
island in the Westman Island group. It is famous for a 1973 eruption that threatened the town of Heimaey, puffins and
beautiful scenery.
- Hiking from Arnastapi to Hellnar -- Arnastapi
and Hellnar are picturesque villages on the Snæfellsnes. Between them lies the Hellnahraun lava field. A short hiking
trail traverse the lava field to get from one village to the other.
- Reykjavik is the the capital city
of Iceland, the largest city in Iceland and the northernmost capital of a sovereign state.
- Snæfellsnes is a penninsula
in Western Iceland. The penninsula is known for the mountain/glacier, Snæfellsjökull, reputed to be the
entrance to the center of the earth.
Sites
- Deildartunguhver is a hot spring
renowned for its high temperature (97°C) and flow rate. Some of the hot water is piped to Borganes adn Akranes
for heating.
- Eiríksstaðir is believed to
be the homestead of Eiríkr Þorvaldsson ("Erik the Red") and birthplace of Leifur Eiríksson (Leif Erikson).
There are remains of a long house and pit house at the site. In 1997, a replica long house was built to give visitors a sense
of what the original was like.
- Eldheimar is a musuem in Heimaey
dedicated to the rembrance of the 1973 eruption of Eldfell. The center peice of the museum is a house buried in
ash and then excavated forty 40 years later. Although the hot ash destroyed much, it also preserved much of the
house and its contents.
- Harpa is a concert hall and conference
center in Reykjavik. In addition, it offers much to play with for the photographer.
- Helgafell (Holy Mountain) is really
more of a hill than a mountain, but it was considered in early times to be a sacred place.
Water Falls
- Hraunfossar and Barnafoss -- Hraunfossar
(Lava Falls) is a collection of small waterfalls formed by rivulets flowing through the porous Hallmundarhraun lava field
into the Hvítá river. Barnafoss (Children's Waterall) is just upstream of the Hraunfossar. It gets its name from
an accident that is said to have taken place there. Two children from a nearby farm fell from an arch that crossed the
river. Grief-stricken, their mother had the arch destroyed.
- Urriðafoss is
Iceland's most voluminous waterfall. It is located on the river Þjórsá in southwest Iceland.
Animals
- Humpback Whales -- We spent a morning aboard
the former fishing vessel , Máni, in the Eyjafjárður east of Dalvík watching for humpback
whales. There were many sightings.
- Puffins -- we were, for the most
part, too late to see puffins on Heimaeyjar, though this did not stop us from trying. Alas, they had left their
nesting sites for the season. What we did encounter were many young puffins ("pufflings") who, confused by the city
lights, had landed in Heimaey. These are rounded up by the children of Heimaey, taken to the Sæheimar Natural History
Museum and Aquarium for measuring, weighing and banding, and then released back into the wild.
